. and if you are an obama fan, you are scratching your head this morning. >> when you were watching it, if you are a romney fan, you are howling with glee. and an obama fan, you were howling at the tv. this was a president who didn't show up for the debate. when you look at how he presented himself, i've coached a lot of candidates. he violated every single rule you can think of. at his opponent. two, in his closing, he didn't look at the camera. three, he didn't answer anything that romney threw at him. and four, his energy level was just in the negative range. felt like he was in the middle of the black hole sucking all the energy out of him. it was just a bad performance. i was kind of amused by watching later on some of the pund ants who was basically having a seizure in the zl84suñ screaming about how obama needs to watch ms nbc. the fact is romney gave the president so many opportunities to just hit him hard and hit him back and the president looked at the call third strike each time. >> romney had a lot to gain from this debate. did the president have a lot to lose or is this okay? thi

's get a look at some headlines this morning. there are concerns today that the obama administration may be looking to move some of the gitmo detainees to american soil. the federal government plans to buy the thompson correctional center in illinois. at one point this prison was considered for housing gitmo detainees and there was a huge controversy based around that. many lawmakers outraged saying it would open the door for ultimately carrying out a gitmo transfer. house speaker john boehner said this, the unilateral decision to purchase the thompson prison, even though congress repeatedly opposed the obama administration's effort to use the taxpayer funds to do so, underscores the administration's desire to move forward and bring these detainees to u.s. soil. the obama administration for its part says it has no plans whatsoever to move the detainees to illinois. >>> air force 2 had quite a ride yesterday. it aborted landings twice. bad weather was to blame. the vice president, joe biden's pair of bumpy ride, thunderstorms forced the pilot to circle the airport the first round, made hi

reporting live for us this morning. dan lothian is in denver, following the obama campaign. what has the president done for final preparations? >> well, he will be, this morning, going through the briefing books again, doing some final preparations and as you heard earlier, doing a walk-through later this afternoon of the venue. but the bulk of the work has happened over the last couple of days as a president was in nevada, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what the real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health care, about the role of government, what the president will do,

alnwick is live at the white house with a preview. >> reporter: good morning. seems like we've been hearing about this debate for months and months and months now. president obama and governor romney have been practicing their paints and their counter points with debate partners. both camps have been sort of downplaying expectations by talking up their opponents. what happens tonight could change the momentum of the presidential race. preparations are under way for tonight's first presidential election debate in colorado. the showdown between president obama and republican candidate mitt romney will take place at the university of denver. up like debates in the past, organizes say this event will be a little different. >> so what is different about the format is that we are dividing the hour and a half debate into six discussion segments. we think that those extended discussion periods will help the viewers around the world really get a sense of the candidates' views on the key issue. >> reporter: the economy is a key issue on the campaign trail but since colorado is one of the few
probably go through this. this is sort of the obama folks are going to console themselves this morning. this is the first presidential debate featuring an incumbent president where the challenger won. you go to reagan. you go to bush in '92. not clinton in '96. go to kerry in '04 and go to today. you got to say, is there something to it? where the incumbent sits there? annoyed he's on equal footing. out of practice, number two. and number three, sort of shackled in by how he knows the job is. not how he wishes the job was or what he was hoping it would be when he was a candidate. throw that all aside. mitt romney didn't just didn't just get himself a second look. the second most important thing that came out of the debate is it gave the republican party and it gave candidates down the ballot hope. something to believe in. and there was a lot of fear, a lot of fear from a a bunch of republicans here in denver saying i'm so relieved. i feared obama would win the debate and there would be a collapse of the republican ticket. >> there has to be something to it in the coming days. i look fo

of the hot topics between president obama and governor mitt romney health care and medicare. >> indeed. kristin fisher tracking the debate for us this morning. she's live in the satellite center trying to break it all down. these are complex issues. >> reporter: good morning. this debate was so focused on the economy that it took the candidates 45 minutes before they ever mentioned the words health care. but when they did, it was certainly one ever the more memorable exchanges of the night. lively exchanges of the night. at one point mitt romney told the president point blank that if elected, he would repeal his health care law to which the president responded by saying, but we've seen this model work really well in massachusetts. here's part of that exchange. >> i want to take the $716 billion you've cut it and put it back into medicare. by the way, we can include a prescription program. but the idea of cutting $716 billion from medicare to be able to balance the additional cost of obama care is in my opinion a mistake. with regards to young people coming along, i've got proposals to
